With the arrival of the Toyota Prius sedan in the Prairie and Maritime provinces, the more useful of the two hybrid-electric vehicles is now available all across Canada.

The other hybrid available for sale is the Honda Insight, but it's only a 2-seat hatchback with limited space for people or cargo.

Prius, on the other hand, functions pretty much like a regular sedan, with four doors and a trunk, spaces for five people and a reasonably good list of equipment for its MSRP of $29,990

For that money, the standard features include remote power windows, mirrors and locks, an engine immobilizer to prevent theft, cruise control, automatic air conditioning, antilock braking system, and AM/FM-cassette-CD.

Optional equipment includes a block heater, cargo net, license plate cover, splash guards, wheel locks and a 6-disc CD changer.

The key ingredient in Prius, however, is the propulsion system. Yoshio Nakatani, President of Toyota Canada Inc., says that Prius is powered by "Toyota Hybrid System technology that combines a gasoline engine and an electric motor in a high-efficiency powertrain that monitors itself continuously to ensure it is operating in the most energy efficient, least polluting mode."
