2002 Volkswagen Golf & GTI - Premium Brand Quality in an Entry Car

With all the excitement focused on SUVs and crossover vehicles it's easy to overlook a conventional car like the VW Golf. Times have changed and hatchbacks just aren't all the rage they were in the 80's. But why?

As trendy as sport utility and crossover vehicles are, most don't perform like the cars they are replacing. That said, performance means different things to different people. The Golf, for instance, excels in acceleration, handling and fuel economy. Just how well it performs in each category depends on available options. The base GL and GLS exchange quick acceleration for strong fuel economy - 9.6 and 6.9 L/100 km city and highway respectively. Its 115-hp 2.0-L 4-cylinder engine is adequate for most drivers, but those seeking an adrenaline rush will be under-whelmed. Ironically the optional 90-hp 1.9-L turbo diesel moves quicker off the line. Its 155 lb-ft of torque, compared to the base engines 122 lb-ft, is the key. What's more, the diesel offers uncommon durability and amazing fuel economy - 4.4 L/100 km highway and 5.6 L/100 km city. Both engines receive a standard 5-speed manual transmission, while a 4-speed automatic is optional.
