Over the past years, Hyundai has been improving their cars and their reputation with cars such as the Sonata, Tucson and Genesis who are now taking big portions of their respective market. The Elantra receives a beauty cure for 2011, the inside and outside of that car being highly inspired by the quality and finish of the Sonata.

The Elantra will come in several trims, L, GL, GLS and Limited. All versions are front-wheel drive and come with a 1.8L 4-cylinder engine with dual continuously variable valve timing. The engine destined for the Canadian market will probably be ULEV (Ultra Low Emissions Vehicle) rated and should develop 148 horsepower and 131 lb-ft of torque. Hyundai claims a highway fuel economy rating of 4.9 L/100 km.

The choice of transmissions includes a 6-speed manual or a 6-speed automatic with manual shift mode, the latter being standard on the Limited trim. Suspension-wise, independent MacPherson struts are mounted up front while the back will benefit from a torsion-bar axle.

A 172-watt sound system with CD/MP3 player, six speakers as well as iPod integration and a USB port are standard on all trims, while the GLS and Limited also gets XM satellite radio. The Limited also benefits from leather upholstery, heated front and rear heated seats (a segment first) and offers an option package that includes a navigation system, a 360-watt stereo upgrade, a 7-inch touch screen, voice recognition and a rear view camera. A Bluetooth hands-free phone system is also available in uplevel trims.

Safety features on all models include anti-lock brakes, six airbags as well as electronic stability control and traction control systems.

The 2011 Elantra will arrive in dealerships in December.
