Pros and Cons*
Pros

Generous standard equipment list provides great value, more rear passenger space than its sedan sibling, versatility, large trunk and the available idle stop/start make the 2013 Kia Rio 5-Door a top-rate contender.

Cons
Unsupportive rear seats and short cushion, lack of telescopic steering in base models, poor soundproofing and average handling will certainly disappoint certain buyers.

Price
The entry-level LX starts at $15,650 and is equipped with standard centre console with armrest, hill assist, steering-mounted audio controls, 15-inch wheels and USB/AUX ports.

The LX+ features steering mounted speed controls, Bluetooth, heated front seats and foglights, for a starting price of $17,150. ECO-ACTIVE automatic transmission can be added for a total of $18,450. Idle stop/start and 15-inch alloy wheels bring the total to $19,250.

In addition to the LX+ version standard equipment, the EX is delivered with standard rear backup camera, mirror-integrated LED signal lights, 16-inch alloy wheels, automatic headlight control, sunroof and leather-covered steering wheel which raise the MSRP to $19,150 or $20,450 for those who crave the automatic transmission.

The SX UVO, at $21,150, is delivered with standard refrigerated glove box, stop/start button, chrome exhaust tips, rain-sensing wipers, 17-inch alloy wheels, sport suspension, leather seating and heated steering wheel. ECO-ACTIVE automatic transmission will bring this total to $22,450, while the additional navigation package is available for a total of $23,650.

Fuel Economy
6.9/5.3 L/100 km city/highway ratings are expected for the manual-transmission versions while automatic versions can expect to consume 7.1/ 5.5 L/100 km city/highway.

ECO mode can lower these totals to approximately 6.8/5.4 L/100 km city/highway.

Exterior Styling
Longer and wider than its predecessor, this totally redesigned 5-door sub-compact looks fast even standing still. The oversized headlights dominate the diminutive front grille. The flowing, bulbous rear end gives it a very sporty overall appearance.

Drivetrain
The 2013 Kia Rio5 has a 1.6 litre 4-cylinder engine under the hood. It produces 138 hp and 123 lb-ft torque which can be matched with buyer’s choice of automatic or manual 6-speed transmissions.

Cargo Capacity
The trunk offers 425 litres of available space which can be tripled, to 1,140 litres, by lowering the seats.

Safety
The Rio5 is equipped with six airbags and various active safety features.
