Economical but by no means bargain-basement

Auto123.com will be crowning winners of the 2018 Auto123.com Awards for best vehicles of the year on November 22 in Toronto. We’ve already unveiled the finalists in each of the 17 categories; today we look in more detail at the Sub-Compact Car of the Year finalists.

Honda Fit
One of the best sub-compacts year after year is back for 2018 with more style, more sportiness and more safety features. This year’s edition represents the first real update to the third generation of the model, launched in 2014. The big news is the addition of the Fit Sport, decked out in a more aggressive and aerodynamic look. The new Fit features the Honda Sensing package of safety and drive assist technologies as standard equipment for the first time, at least on all versions with CVT transmission. More details on the Fit.

Chevrolet Sonic
Modernized last year, the Chevrolet Sonic is a perfect example of the new breed of economical small cars that are anything but bargain-basement. Its design, ride comfort and wide range of equipment (especially in the higher version) give it the feel of a much pricier car. More details on the Sonic.

Kia Rio
A new generation has been developed for the 2018 model-year. This is a resolutely modern, spacious and sophisticated sub-compact car, which manages to remain very affordable and continues to offer an incredible array of standard equipment for the price. Some versions even feature the first integrated telematics system from Kia, offered free of charge for the first five years of ownership. More details on the Rio 5-door.
