On the eve of the 2008 North American International Auto Show press preview, General Motors organized a special event that's definitely worth talking about. This invitation-only evening gathered over 800 guests under the same roof. The idea was to give local fashion designers a golden opportunity to display their latest creations. The American auto giant took advantage of this event to showcase a number of its freshly-designed products, including brand new production models and several concept studies.

The show also featured electrifying musical performances by renowned DJs, artists and guest bands. The crowd danced to the sound of DJ Jacques, who came directly from Los Angeles. The queen of R&B, Mary J. Blige, sang her heart out, much to the delight of her many fans. Later, we were treated to an amazing performance by Maroon 5. Detroit-native Kid Rock and the rest of his gang took care of finishing the night off on a memorable note.

Amidst the jamming and the rocking was a succession of fashion parades from such acclaimed designers as Guess' Marciano, Kevan Hall, who creates dresses for celebrities like Felicity Hoffman, Sharon Stone and Charlize Theron, Mark Zunino, known for his sophisticated ready-to-wear collection, Kelly Gray (Royal Underground), Gary Arnett (Made in Detroit), Russell Simmons, founder of Argyle Culture (a classic yet modern line of clothing for young urban professionals), and William Fast, who always finds tasteful ways to use denim. Even Kid Rock himself made a fashion statement by wearing T-shirts representing gearboxes and pistons.

The thing that stood out from these parades was an incredible sense of style and novelty. I especially liked the fact that all the interesting creations displayed in front of us are affordable and accessible to anyone -- unlike the Lagerfield and Dior collections, for instance.

Of course, being a GM event, the show was marked by several vehicle presentations, including the new Cadillac CTS and Escalade Platinum. The automaker also dazzled the crowd with the endearing Beat Concept, the Saturn Astra Tuner Concept and the Pontiac Solstice SO-290 Concept, not to mention the decidedly modern HHR Concept and the retro-styled Chevy Hot Rod E85.

And then there were the Camaro Bumblebee Concept, the gorgeous Opel Corsa OPC and finally the upcoming 620-hp Corvette ZR1.
