The first-generation Ford Thunderbird, which hit the market in 1955 aiming to rival the Chevrolet Corvette, ceased to be built on December 13th, 1957.

Company executives felt that the car's position as a two-seater restricted its sales potential, so the T-Bird was redesigned as a four-seater for 1958, and immediately enjoyed a lot of success.

Overall, 53,166 copies of the original version were manufactured. Other than a lack of rear seats, many lamented its excessively hot cabin, poor visibility with the top up, and limited trunk space.
