A pickup truck from Mercedes-Benz? That's right, folks! By 2020, the German automaker will release one in Europe, Latin America, Australia, and South Africa. No word yet about the North American market.

The vehicle will be built by Daimler's commercial-van division.

"The Mercedes-Benz pickup will contribute nicely to our global growth targets,” Daimler CEO Dieter Zetsche said in a statement. "We will enter this segment with our distinctive brand identity and all of the vehicle attributes that are typical of the brand with regard to safety, comfort, powertrains, and value."

According to Mercedes-Benz, consumers are more and more fond of pickup trucks. It also said that commercial as well as private users are increasingly asking for vehicles that have car-like specifications.

As previously reported, Mercedes-Benz -- the world's third-largest premium automaker -- plans to overtake Audi and market leader BMW in sales by the end of the decade. Will a pickup make a difference? Time will tell.
