With the 2011 IZOD IndyCar season less than a month away, let's see where the series and its sponsor-needy teams are at.
There have been plenty of good news to report in the last couple of weeks, including the return of General Motors (Chevrolet) for 2012, increased participation from Lotus, the extension of the Edmonton Indy and, more importantly, the presence of a true leader and visionary in Randy Bernard. However, IndyCar's problems continue to overshadow its positives. Sam Schmidt miraculously bought out FAZZT Racing, de Ferran Dragon Racing shut down and numerous teams are still searching for financial support. In addition, it has been announced that Firestone will abandon the series at the end of the upcoming season. Here's an overview of the various contenders:
Target Chip Ganassi Racing Much like its arch nemesis (Team Penske), the defending IndyCar champion once again has loads of money to spend, so much in fact that they created a ''B'' team for 2011 with separate personnel and facilities. A Team Back on the track will be last year's top driver Dario Franchitti, who aims for a third title, and long-time teammate/rival Scott Dixon, who's entering his 10th season with Chip Ganassi. B Team After months of speculation, Graham Rahal has been confirmed to drive the No. 38 Service Central car. It's a unique opportunity for him to showcase all his skills while racing for a top-tier team. Meanwhile, Indy Lights veteran Charlie Kimball will drive the No. 83 Novo Nordisk car. This guy is talented for sure, but huge backing from his personal sponsor definitely helps him.
