Quirky Aerio offered cheap AWD and reasonably reliable operation
Sometimes, a car has to be everything to everyone: a minivan, crossover, sports sedan and an SUV. The Suzuki Aerio Wagon was one machine that tackled a plethora of tasks exceptionally well, while earning itself a reputation for its high value proposition and access to cheap AWD.

The Aerio lineup has now been retired to make way for the new SX4, though it enjoyed favor with thousands of active buyers after a high-utility economy car.

Aerio Wagon was a rather awkward but charming looking five-door that boasted alloy wheels, fog-lamps and a tailgate spoiler for a sportier look. It was available with all wheel drive too, and had the distinction of being the least expensive North American car to offer it.

Depending on the year in which you're shopping, you'll find safety covered by front airbags, side airbags and ABS brakes, though these safety features only became standard gear late in the models life.

Power came from four cylinder engines with between 141 and 155 horsepower from a 2.0 liter or 2.3 liter powerplant, respectively. 2004 and later models got the upgraded engine.

Given Suzuki's relatively obscure reputation in many circles, they jammed the SX4 full of standard equipment to help make it very appealing to value-minded buyers after an upscale economy car. You'll find air conditioning, power accessories, a CD player, tilt steering and split-folding seats.

Power locks, remote entry, power windows and mirrors could be fitted, alongside automatic climate control. Look for high-tech digital instruments in earlier models too- but note that they can be hard to read in direct sunlight.

Opt for an Aerio model with the all wheel drive system, and you'll find yourself in a machine with fantastic wintertime traction and stability. The all wheel drive system could only be paired with the automatic transmission, though a five-speed manual was available on front-drive models.
