Porsche says that their engineers have been able to hit speeds as high as 86 miles per hour in the upcoming Cayenne S Hybrid. The gas-electric version of the popular performance SUV is set for launch in 2010 and will feature a performance-enhancing parallel hybrid drive system that fixes the electric motor between the gas engine and transmission.

According to Porsche, this layout allows the Cayenne to coast freely at highway speeds without the gas engine running, while delivering increased performance and acceleration. Acceleration from 0 to 100 km/h is promised in under 7 seconds, and the Cayenne S Hybrid qualifies as an Ultra Low Emission Vehicle II (ULEV II).

For those watching their C02 emissions, Cayenne S Hybrid is expected to emit 20 percent less than a comparable model with similar output. The Hybrid model gets to wear the 'S' badge thanks to their V8 levels of power alongside claimed four-cylinder fuel consumption.

Under the hood will be the second Audi powerplant to find its way into a Cayenne. The combustion-powered portion of the Cayenne S Hybrid drivetrain is an Audi 3.0 litre supercharged V6 with 333 horsepower. Power from the engine is combined with the efforts of the 52 horsepower electric motor and sent to the road by an 8-speed automatic.

EPA mileage ratings aren't yet available, though Porsche expects the Cayenne S Hybrid will consume under 9L / 100km in European testing.

A hybrid drive system will be available in the upcoming Panamera four-door as well.
