Pros and cons*
Pros

Its modern interior, quiet ride and comfortable front and rear seats are gift-wrapped in a superb contemporary design. Its numerous technological safety innovations and superb winter-driving capabilities are exemplary.

Cons
Unfortunately, the lengthy options list makes it is easy to blow the budget. Uninspired handling, sparse dealer network, and an all-wheel drive option that obliges customers to purchase the turbocharged model contribute to weaken its position in this highly competitive market.

Price
The base 2013 Volvo XC60 powered by the 3.2 litre normally-aspirated engine starts at $39,350. Three additional versions are available: the Premier, which starts at $43,300, the Premier Plus, which starts at $45,450, and the Platinum, at $48,750.

The 6-cylinder turbocharged version starts at $46,900. Two additional models are available with this engine, the Premier Plus, at $49,150, and the Platinum, with a starting price of $52,450.

The R-Design has an MSRP of $53,500. Its sports suspension and 20-inch wheels are just a small sample of the standard options. The Premium Plus version is available from $55,100, and the Platinum starts at $58,500.

Fuel Economy
The normally-aspirated 6-cylinder consumes 11.2 L/100 km in city testing and 7.8 L/100 km in highway testing. The turbocharged engine is rated at 12.1 L/100 km city and 8.5 L/100 km highway.

New for 2013
Headlight washers and rain-sensing wipers are now standard equipment on this model. New colours are available for 2013.

Exterior Styling
Both the front and rear end of this racy crossover accentuate its sportiness. Its aerodynamic profile and low ground clearance highlight its versatile nature. Its curvy hindquarters add to this elegant style.

Drivetrain

The in-line 6-cylinder engine delivers 240 hp and 236 lb-ft torque to the front wheels. If all-wheel drive is what you desire, you then need to order the 3.0 litre turbocharged engine, which produces 300 hp and 325 lb-ft torque.

Both engine choices are coupled to the Geartronic 6-speed automatic transmission. The R-Design version has a turbocharged engine that cranks out 325 horsepower.

Cargo Capacity
Depending on seat configuration, the rear cargo area varies between 872 and 1,909 litres.

Safety
This sedan has a total of six airbags, a pedestrian detection system, and a side impact protection system. Options include adaptive cruise control, collision warning with full auto-brake, and lane departure warning. Volvo remains the automotive-safety leader.
