Just a few years back, when the F-Pace first stepped out into the world, the debut SUV from the Jaguar firm caused quite a stir, and elicited more than a few cries of sacrilege. Now, here we are in 2018, and Jaguar is busy working on its fourth utility model. Times have certainly changed, though as always, if you want to pinpoint a driving force behind that change, money talks, as they say.
This time, the now-Indian-owned automaker is getting set to take on the likes of the Porsche Cayenne and other German big shots. According to the Autocar website, a new SUV in the works from Jaguar will be the company’s biggest one yet. The J-Pace will set its sights squarely on the loyal German large luxury ‘ute buyer.
Designers are picking from the Land Rover toolbox for many of the new model’s mechanical components, in part to give it the ability to rival the Cayenne Turbo S and the BMW X5M on the performance front. It’s also expected that some form of electric or hybrid version will be offered as well. Jaguar did after all commit to producing an electrified version of each of its models by 2020.
As for the design, the talents of noted stylist Ian Callum will once again be solicited.
As of now, the best bet on an auto show debut for the J-Pace is sometime in 2020, with a commercial launch to follow in 2021. Here’s hoping we’ll see some kind of concept version next year…
