The Takata saga continues. Following last week’s recall of 12 million additional cars in the U.S., five European automakers plus General Motors have just announced new airbag recalls affecting 2.5 million units.
Here’s a breakdown:
- General Motors: 1.9 million
- Volkswagen AG: 217,000
- Mercedes-Benz: 200,000
- BMW: 92,000
- Jaguar Land Rover: 54,000
- Daimler: 5,100
The number of vehicles to be recalled by these automakers in Canada remains unknown for now.
Overall, more than 100 million cars with defective Takata airbag inflators have been recalled around the world. More are expected to follow as some automakers keep selling these vehicles due to a shortage of replacement airbags.
