Tesla Motors is putting the finishing touches on a new electric model. The company's current president, Elon Musk, gave a preview of their next product. The S sedan will feature a driving range of 360 kilometres on a single battery charge.
The luxury electric sedan is highly anticipated, but production has been delayed for several reasons, namely financial and management issues. Musk also confirmed that production won't be launched until they receive financial guarantees from investors and the US Department of Energy.
Production was originally planned for 2010 as a 2011 model. Because of this delay, the Tesla S and its circa $60,000 sales price will have to face other important players in the electric-car field that carry smaller price tags: the Chevrolet Volt, Honda Insight and Toyota Prius. The manufacturer might lose a lot of momentum, and this currently seems to be discouraging investors.
The latest news from the company was negative, concerning the closure of its Michigan research centre and large-scale downsizing. However, the Tesla Roadster is selling strongly, with a 1,200-order waiting list and a $100,000 sales price per unit.
