That record will most certainly fall, however, if Volkswagen AG's Bugatti division ever brings its EB 16.4 Veyron to market. Late in April, Bugatti pushed its Veyron beyond 400 km/h (248.5 mph) on a high speed section of VW's Ehra - Lessien proving grounds, crushing its closest rival.

measuring units, the Veyron achieved its record-setting pace several times in both directions, requirements of official measuring procedures.

"The Bugatti super-sports-car has thus attained yet another major goal in it ambitious development process," stated a company spokesman.

A production version of the Veyron has been expected for years, but despite prototypes showing up at auto shows, on the racetrack at Monterey, CA, and elsewhere, nothing that can be purchased has become available.
