The highly anticipated and completely redesigned 2016 Chevrolet Volt, inaugurating the second generation of GM's extended-range electric vehicle, debuted today at the North American International Auto Show in Detroit. It showcases a sleeker, sportier design while offering 50 miles (80 kilometres) of EV range, greater efficiency, and stronger acceleration than the outgoing model.
In ideal conditions, new Volt owners can expect to travel more than 1,000 miles (1,600 kilometres) on average between gas fill-ups. Lighter, higher-capacity batteries and smaller electric motors play a key role, as does the regenerative braking system.
Other 2016 Chevrolet Volt highlights include:
- New 1.5L engine/generator;
- New, five-passenger seating with available rear heated seats;
- Stronger body structure and quieter ride;
- Location-based charging capability.
With regard to that last one, Volt owners will be able to pre-set their 120V charging level and whether they wish to charge immediately, set a departure time for each day of the week, or set a departure time and a utility rate schedule to charge only at off-peak rates.
The 2016 Chevrolet Volt also comes standard with a rearview camera and 10 airbags. Options include lane keep assist, lane departure warning, side blind zone alert with lane change alert, rear cross traffic alert, forward collision alert with following distance indicator, front automatic braking, and advanced park assist with front and rear park assist (semi-automatic parallel parking).
