Forty years ago, the famous HEMI-powered Dodge Darts and Plymouth Barracudas shone on various drag strips across America. In an attempt to revive these legends, Chrysler LLC and its high-performance Mopar division decided to create a new variant of the 2009 Dodge Challenger exclusively aimed at winning drag races.
On July 13, the automaker will unveil this high-octane monster which will be aptly named Challenger Drag Race Package.
Taking no shortcuts and making no compromises, Mopar engineers worked relentlessly to reduce the weight of the Challenger. Every unnecessary component has been taken off. They also used ultra-lightweight materials and parts in a number of strategic areas. Furthermore, the wheelbase has been shortened so as to optimize weight distribution.
A choice of three engines will be offered to buyers, though no official specs have been released yet. At least 100 units will be produced, all complying to the standards and regulations of the National Hot Rod Association (NHRA), the self-proclaimed "largest and loudest auto racing organization in the world."
