10:45 AM - Honda has just held a press conference that emphasizes their concerns in economy, environment, and security.
Their goal: to preserve blue skies for our children.
Honda received an award for being the Greenest automobile manufacturer.
They also announced their upcoming 8th generation Civic, due out in the US in fall 2005 as a 2006 model.
The new Civic will feature an all-new i-VTEC engine, an all-new chassis, and standard ABS brakes, lateral airbags and side-curtain airbags on all trim levels.
In addition to a conventional gasoline version, the US will get hybrid and natural-gas versions, but the latter will probably not come up to Canada.
Honda announced four body styles for their upcoming compact, so we can assume that the much-loved Civic hatchback will mark its return.
As for other models, all 2006 Hondas in the US will be equipped with standard traction control, ABS brakes, and 6 airbags. No word yet if the Canadian-spec models will get the same safety features as standard equipment.
The automaker also taunted their latest technologies. VCM, or Variable Cylinder Management, is currently offered in the 2005 Odyssey and Accord Hybrid, and will equip the 2006 Pilot. They also talked about Pedestrian Safety, which is designing cars in a way to reduce the number of deaths when a pedestrian is hit. Honda also talked about Collision Mitigation Brake System, composed of sensors that monitor the speed of approaching vehicles, and will apply brake pressure by itself if it detects an imminent collision. The CMBS is already standard equipment on the 2005 Acura RL and will be offered on other models in the future.
Last but not least, Honda will not only build engines for their F1 team next season, they will get a new challenge as they will also build the chassis.
