Honda took advantage of all the media coverage at the 2007 Los Angeles Auto Show to unveil its new FCX Clarity advanced fuel cell vehicle. The Japanese automaker, actively involved in environmental protection R&D, also announced plans to begin limited retail marketing of the production vehicle in summer 2008.

The FCX Clarity is based on the all-new Honda V Flow fuel cell platform. Compared to previous generations of fuel cell vehicles, significant improvements have been made to power, efficiency (3.4 L/100 km), driving range (535 km) and design. The fuel cell stack operates as the vehicle's main power source, but the FCX Clarity also boasts a lithium-ion battery pack, a regenerative braking and deceleration system, and a single hydrogen tank.

In order to evaluate how this new technology will fare in real-world conditions, Honda will lease the FCX Clarity to a limited number of retail consumers in Southern California, with the first deliveries taking place next summer. Current plans call for a three-year lease term with a price of about $600 per month, including maintenance and collision insurance.
