The Lotus Eco Elise is a greener version of the regular Elise. However, it's not about reducing emissions. Rather than modifying the engine, Lotus engineers decided to replace several key materials by renewable, environmentally-friendly ones, including hemp, eco wool and sisal. These materials have been carefully analyzed in order to make sure that they effectively mitigate the Elise's impact on Mother Nature.
Cleaner manufacturing processes have been achieved by utilizing the latest water-based paint technology. The hard top, body panels and spoiler are all made of locally-grown hemp. This way, Lotus is able to reduce emissions from supply transportation.
Additionally, the roof incorporates a set of solar panels that provide power for the car's electrical systems. As a result, the engine needs to produce less energy, which improves fuel economy.
In order to help owners develop sound, fuel-efficient driving habits, Lotus added a green indicator light on the dashboard, sending a signal when you should shift gears to save fuel.
Efforts have also been made to reduce the weight of the vehicle. The Eco Elise is 32-kilogram lighter than the Elise S, which only weighs 860 kilos.
The Eco Elise embodies the commitment by Lotus to develop greener cars. This concept will be showcased at British International Motor Show, taking place from July 23 to August 3.
