The Michelin Tweel airless radial tire, first introduced as a prototype in 2005, will enter production very shortly. In fact, the company's Piedmont, South Carolina plant will open this Thursday.
The Tweel is already available for skid steer loaders and certain John Deere lawnmowers. It uses a steel centre hub (which bolts up just like a regular wheel) and poly-resin spokes. No air inside means no chance of getting a flat. Even better, the Tweel deforms around most obstacles and then regains its original shape as if nothing happened.
