NASCAR announced penalties against the owner and crew chief of the Michael Waltrip’s Daytona winning truck.
On a weekend of high emotion, honoring the ten anniversary of the tragic death of Dale Earnhardt, Michael Waltrip drove the Billy Ballew Toyota to Victory Lane after a crash filled race on Friday night. It was a dramatic finish with Waltrip taking the checkered flag after a restart.
Michael Waltrip won the 2001 Daytona 500 driving for Earnhardt’s DEI racing. He also 2003 Daytona 500.
When Michael Waltrip crossed the finish line his rear spoiler was broken – down an unapproved angle.
Late Wednesday NASCAR issued penalties against the truck owner and crew for actions detrimental to NASCAR.
According to the realease "The No. 15 truck driven by Michael Waltrip was found to be in violation of Sections 12-1 (actions detrimental to stock car racing); 12-4-J (any determination by NASCAR Officials that the race equipment used in the event does not conform to NASCAR rules); and 20B-3.1.2E (rear spoiler did not meet specifications in post-race inspection) of the 2011 NASCAR Rule Book.
As a result, crew chief Doug Howe has been fined $25,000 and placed on NASCAR probation until Dec. 31. Owner Billy Ballew has been penalized with the loss of 25 championship owner points." The winner’s purse was over $73,000.
In a Twitter exchange with journalists, curious for more details, Michael Waltrip – talking about the spoiler – wrote "it broke."
NASCAR did not take away the victory from Michael Waltrip.
