Helping celebrate three decades of leadership in turbocharging technology, Saab has created a limited-production Turbo X 9-3 model which calls to mind the first black 99 and 900 Turbo models from the past.
The all-black model also launches the automakers Cross Wheel Drive (XWD) technology that's designed for incredibly responsive and nimble handling characteristics.
Turbo X is set apart by special 18-inch wheels finished in grey titanium, and it also features enhanced aerodynamic performance and a lowered ride height. Under the hood is a 2.8 liter turbocharged V6 that generates 280 horsepower and 295 lb.-ft of torque. It's made entirely of aluminum for lighter weight, and boasts variable valve timing and a twin-scroll turbo for enhanced performance.
The engine is mated to six speed automatic or manual transmission, and then to Saab's innovative XWD system. Full of tricks, it can preemptively engage the rear wheels for fast off-the-line acceleration, as well as momentarily cut power to a single rear axle during high speed maneuvers for added stability and sharpness. The latter move is enabled by a slick electronic Limited Slip Differential (eLSD), the only one in the segment. The eLSD can shift up to 40 percent of the engine's power between the rear axles.
Pricing starts at $54,995 for the Turbo X Sport Sedan, and $56,305 for the SportCombi. XWD system is also available for $2,340 as an option on 9-3 Aero models, in both body styles, for $2,340.
