Jamie Whincup held off a determined charge of Shane Van Gisbergen to win the second half of the Gold Coast 600.
This event was a special double-header consisting of twin 300km races in the streets of Surfer Paradise replacing the Gold Coast Indy which ran from 1991 to 2009.
“That is certainly up there as far as wins, we were a sitting duck there at the end but the car was a long way from yesterday, we reinvented the wheel which is not uncommon in motorsport, a tune up here or a tweak there, a spring change and so on, massive amount of changes last night, and the car was a lot better today,” said Whincup who was teamed with Steve Owen.
“It was definitely on at the end there and we were trying pretty hard, Jamie was driving really well, it was a great fight and I am pretty happy with the result, I would have been happy with third but second is better!” said van Gisbergen who was teamed with John McIntyre.
Jacques Villeneuve, who was hit from behind in Saturday’s race, had a much better day, co-finishing fifth.
But Alex Tagliani who started 22nd, and worked his way up to fifth, didn’t fare as well when he was struck from behind causing a lengthy pit stop for repairs.
"We were having a pretty good race and went from 22nd on the grid up to fifth," Alex Tagliani told Auto123.com.
"I was just keeping my nose clean and on a tight track like this that is pretty tough but there was some respectful driving going on out there. A couple of laps after a restart our friend Russell Ingall just pushed us out of the way and crashed us. I am very disappointed for the team, because the guys worked very hard. We changed the set-up after qualifying and the car was working really well. Too bad our race finished like that,” Tagliani added
