09-11-2001 was a bad day in US history.
There had been a great debate whether to race or not race. But after the many
aspects were considered, the race was held.
The Champ Cars took to the EuroSpeedway in Lausitz, Germany.
Fans from all over the world hoped to find a diversion from terror and return to
their "normal" lives. What started promising and fresh, ended tragically.
Alex Zanardi's fight for victory was instantly stopped. Moments later, he was
battling for his life. His twin foundations brutally removed, leaving his
valiant heart and mighty soul.
Alex clung to his existence as the CART medical safety team put their
considerable expertise into overdrive. Miraculously, they were able to stop the
eulogy before it could be written.
Media personnel unaccustomed with racing delivered the horrific news to our eyes
and ears. The accident was given special attention due to the massive event
cancellations in the United States and abroad. The footage of a helicopter
transporting Alex away ran continuously.
The race broadcast was delayed.
And we waited.
