Dan Wheldon crowned IndyCar Series Champion & Danica Patrick clinches Bombardier Rookie-of-the-Year source: The Glen Flagworld's 2251 photos @ The Glen this weekend Scott Dixon claimed the Inaugural Watkins Glen Indy Grand Prix presented by Argent Mortgage Sunday when open-wheel racing return to The Glen ' at long last in his Toyota powered Indy Car. The Target Chip Ganassi driver dominated the second half of the race, leading 26 of the last 29 laps. Dixon was never given a chance to cruise due to the relentless challenge of Tony Kanaan for the lead. Kanaan finished in second place with his Andretti Green teammate Dario Franchitti in third. Giorgio Pantano battled back from a drive through penalty to finish forth. A joyous Dixon elaborated on his victory, 'The car, all day, was superb. It was quick. It was fast, even in traffic. It was better really. We just raced to the front. We passed cars when we needed to, had power and the handling to do it.' Dixon commented on his first race at WGI, 'I think this track is all about momentum. To be honest, the headwind down the back straight really helped to pass cars. Toyota did a great job in bringing good power to this race.' Kanaan on his hard fought second place finish, 'I would say it was a good day. We had a very good start. That was basically it. I think Scott drove a hell of a race. I knew how strong he was because he passed me more than once on the racetrack. I knew it was going to be tough. I tried to beat him on the stops. That was the only way I could really try to be ahead of him.' Dan Wheldon was crowned the 2005 IndyCar Series champion when the race reached the half way point on lap 30. An exuberant Wheldon celebrated the championship victory with burnouts on the front stretch at The Glen with his three Andretti Green teammates. Wheldon finished the inaugural race in fifth position.
