The only thing Sebastien Bourdais had to do to clinch his second successive Champ Car World Series title last Sunday was to get himself trackside in time for the start of yesterday's Indy 300 on the streets of Surfers Paradise source: The Australian News The points system in the American-based open wheeler series guarantees every finisher at least a point, which was all Bourdais needed to defend the crown he secured for the first time last year. But the Frenchman's racing instinct did not take long to kick in as he used his skill behind the wheel of the super quick Newman-Hass Racing car to stay out of trouble on the tricky circuit and win the penultimate round of the season. The 26-year-old, from the famous French motor racing town of Le Mans, is too much of a purist to cruise around at the rear of the field. He is the first back-to-back winner of the Champ Car crown since Brazil's Gil de Ferran in 2000 and 2001. "It was one of the races I had never won before and it's a historical race, so it means something," said Bourdais, who finished second in Surfers last year. "It's a great performance to be able to win the championship and to top it up with a win and finish in great fashion."
