Ryan Briscoe's IndyCar completely vertical after contact with the #51 car of Alex Barron source: paddocktalk.com - Sam Tickell The IRL had a highflying day in Chicago for the Peak Antifreeze Indy 300. Records were broken, cars were smashed and one car literally flew. The weekend started well. Rookie favorite Danica Patrick soared to her third pole position of the year. "It feels great to win to win the pole in Chicago in front of all my friends and family. Three poles in a season is a great accomplishment for any driver," said a delighted Patrick after qualifying. Patrick led the first lap of the race, was doing a great job keeping up with the lead pack right up until the first yellow flag. The yellow was waved following a violent accident involving Ryan Briscoe, Alex Barron and Kosuke Matsuura. The accident occurred when Briscoe tried to place his Target Panoz Toyota underneath the Red Bull Dallara Toyota of Barron. Briscoe was on the inside, and his car seemed to wash up. The Target car's right front tire began to roll over the Red Bull's left front. The resulting accident was huge. Briscoe's vehicle climbed over Barron's and went nose up towards the outside retaining wall. When Briscoel hit, he was vertical. The tail of the car hit first against the SAFER barrier, while the nose caught the catch fencing. Fire and shrapnel resulted.
