The next generation of two of the most famous names
in motorsports got their first chance to test together at the legendary
Indianapolis Motor Speedway.
Race fans around the world likely are aware of the exploits of the Unser and
Andretti families, especially in the Indianapolis 500 mile race. Al Unser, Bobby
Unser and Al Unser Jr. have combined for nine Indianapolis 500 victories.
The Andretti family has just one Indy 500 victory, by Mario Andretti in 1969,
but his son Michael Andretti led more laps than any driver in the Indy 500
without winning the race. Mario Andretti also won the 1978 Formula One World
Driving Championship.
Thursday, Al Unser, the son of Al Unser Jr., and Marco Andretti, the son of
Michael Andretti and grandson of Mario Andretti, turned their first laps at
Indianapolis while testing for the Menards Infiniti Pro Series race next week at
St. Petersburg, Fla.
The Pro Series is the Indy Racing League developmental series that will compete
as a support race to the US Grand Prix June 17-19 at the Indianapolis Motor
Speedway.
So the next generation Unser and Andretti, in their first chance to test at the
Brickyard in Indianapolis, found themselves circling the Speedway in the
opposite direction of the Indy 500. They drove north on the nearly 1 mile long
front stretch of the Indianapolis Motor Speedway, toward the oval's fourth turn,
before diving into the infield portion of the road course.
